The federal government has introduced this program to standardize identification across all 50 states.  On Oct 1, 2020, anyone boarding an airliner or entering a federal facility like a federal building or military base will need to have this federally compliant identification (or a valid passport).  Real ID is usually shown as a gold star on the upper right-hand side of your drivers license. Fortunately, most states are updating their standard ID requirements to meet these standards.

To be Real ID-compliant you will need to provide several specific pieces of paperwork.  In Pennsylvania, if you received your initial drivers license in the last 15 years, the DMV may already have all of your Real ID verification information on file.
